The African Protection Legion encompasses on Earth all of Africa except Egypt, and many island nations such as the Bahamas. The APL is run by the Council of Kings, descended from the rulers of the ancient nations from which they came. They are not the most technologically advanced in many areas when compared to other governments, with one exception. The APL have excelled in one area, mining. The first to develop multiphase diamond carbon steel alloy drilling (a process where diamond shards are embedded in high-strength carbon steel that can only be accomplished in high G conditions), they have a virtual monopoly on drilling machinery throughout the System. They only hold Mercury, within easy distance of the edge of Sol’s gravity well, which is where the largest drilling machinery factory lies.  Other nations have never been able to reverse-engineer this material nor gain access to the exact process to make it even with the best intelligence and covert operations, as well as the finest scientists in the System working on the project.
