The Earth Union started in its infancy as the European Union, but with the cession of the UK and the addition of many non-European nations to it, the abbreviation was simply redefined. Nations on Earth that are part of the EU include France, Germany, Spain, Portugal (the two notable exceptions that broke with the ENL), Greenland, Canada, Sweden, Finland and Norway, as well as many smaller former European Union nations. The EU is on the cutting edge of technology, and is the most accepting of new definitions of true sentience and is quickest to give full citizenship rights to the newest sapient lifeforms such as the Uploaded, AI, and Neo-Sentients. The government is one of the closest approaches to true Democracy as has ever existed, with a “nightly vote” available for any interested citizen on many minor legislative tasks, though government officials are often selected at random from a pool of people who have specifically subscribed to the lottery. The only restriction on this is that the citizen must have been born or created in the EU.

The EU only exclusively control the moon Io in addition to their Earthbound territories, though they are peppered throughout HEO, L4 and L5, and the Main Belt.
