Io is used by the EU for mining of silicates used in cybernetics and for its natural furnaces to superheat many materials used in space travel. Electrical power is never in short supply on Io, being able to be pulled directly from the air with high-tech collectors developed by the EU to exploit the potentially deadly synergy between Io and Jupiter. Only the specially protected cyber-shells who work in the factories of Io actually live on the surface. Most live in ships and stations in high enough orbit around Io to avoid the volcanic activity of the moon.
